Door hardware and repair

A door that will not latch may need work at the hinges, closer, lever, or strike rather than a different key.

Watch what happens as the door moves through its swing. A scrape near the floor suggests something different from a latch hitting above its opening. Wood and metal doors also have different mounting details, which matter when hardware is adjusted or replaced.

Follow the movement

Hinges carry the door and define its swing. Loose mounting points or worn hinge parts can change where the latch meets the frame. A sagging door may need lifting at the handle before the bolt lines up.

A closer controls the closing motion. Its settings and mounting position affect that movement, while a lever operates the latch mechanism. The strike is the frame-mounted piece that receives the latch or bolt.

  • Note where the door rubs against the frame or floor.
  • Check whether the lever returns after being released.
  • Describe whether the door swings closed but fails to latch.
  • Identify the door material and any visibly loose hardware.

Keep symptoms separate

A key that turns normally does not rule out a door alignment issue. Likewise, a smooth door swing does not explain a cylinder that binds. Each moving part has its own role.

Grinding a strike opening or repeatedly tightening one closer screw without checking the assembly can obscure the original symptom. The useful description is what moves, what catches, and where contact occurs.

Common questions

Why does the door need lifting before locking?

The latch and strike may be sitting at different heights because of hinge wear, mounting movement, or the door's position.

Is the closer also the lock?

No. It governs closing motion; the latch, bolt, and cylinder handle separate mechanical functions.

Does the door material affect repair choices?

Wood and metal use different fastening and preparation methods, so the material shapes the hardware discussion.
